The Continental Club

the Continental Club in Houston

The Continental Club in Houston is a well-known music venue located at 3700 Main Street in the Midtown area. It sits along the METRORail line, making it easy to reach from other parts of the city. Since opening in 2000 as a sister club to the original in Austin, it has become a trusted spot for live music with a focus on rock, blues, country, and roots music.

The stage regularly hosts both local talent and touring acts. Performances range from rockabilly bands to blues guitarists, with some nights leaning into country or swing. The sound inside is clear but not overwhelming, giving the music a chance to shine without drowning out conversations. Dancing is common, especially during upbeat sets.

Some well-known artists have passed through the club in recent years. Dale Watson, a country artist with a honky-tonk style, has been a regular performer. Jesse Dayton, a singer-songwriter blending country, punk, and blues, has drawn crowds here. Mike Barfield, sometimes called the “Tyrant of Texas Funk,” is another name that pops up often. Local favorites like The Allen Oldies Band, who cover classic rock and pop hits, also fill the room.

The space itself is cozy but not cramped. Red walls, vintage décor, and a checkerboard floor give it a retro feel. The stage is raised, so even those toward the back can see the band. There’s a small patio out front, offering a quieter spot for a drink or a break from the music.

The club is part of a larger block known as The Continental Club Complex. Right next door is Shoeshine Charley’s Big Top Lounge, which often has its own lineup of live acts, leaning more toward folk, jazz, and acoustic performances. The two spots work well together, letting people move between different styles of music in the same night.

Drinks are reasonably priced, with beer and cocktails being the most popular. There’s no kitchen, but food trucks often park nearby, and Midtown has several late-night dining options within walking distance.

Parking can be limited, especially on weekends. Street parking is available, though it can fill up quickly. Valet service is sometimes offered, and the METRORail stop nearby makes public transportation a convenient option.

Cover charges depend on the night and the act but are usually affordable compared to larger venues. Cash is useful for entry, though cards are accepted at the bar.

The Continental Club has built its reputation by staying true to live music, giving both up-and-coming artists and well-known performers a stage in a relaxed, unpretentious setting. It remains a go-to spot for those looking to catch quality shows without the fuss of bigger venues.
